Somalia - Clean Water Project

Somalia, 2008

In many parts of Africa, especially the rural parts, it is difficult to find a reliable source of clean water HISG is working with one of our partners to drill wells that will provide water for an orphanage, a school and a village in central Somalia. The village is home to many displaced people who have fled to the area to escape the conflict along the Ethiopia-Somalia border. The new wells feed a reservoir that will provide water for the community during the dry seasons (December through March and July through September).

An adequate supply of clean water is vital for the people of Somalia, especially for the elderly and children who cannot travel long distances to find water. According to some estimates, unsafe drinking water is the cause of 80% of the illnesses around the world. In addition to Somalia, HISG has been involved in water projects in Bangladesh, Sudan, Indonesia, and in the recent disasters in China and Myanmar. Water Services is also one of the 14 Primary Service Areas outlined in HISG's International Disaster Response Model.
