HISG is supporting rebuilding efforts from Cyclone Sidr, which destroyed entire cities and killed thousands of people in Bangladesh in November of 2007. The storm caused 16-foot tidal waves that flattened houses, displaced more than 500,000 people, and decimated Bangladesh's fishing and agriculture industries.
HISG is working with our partner in Bangladesh to provide clean water and other critical supplies like medicine, blankets and emergency food rations. We have also helped to rebuild houses for families that lost their homes in the storm.
In the past few months, HISG has transitioned from distributing relief supplies to working with families to help them identify sustainable businesses that will build their community. Some families have started raising goats, which are an appealing option for first time farmers because they easy to care for and produce high-protein milk. Other families have re-started rickshaw taxi services they operated before the cyclone. HISG is working with communities in Bangladesh to ensure that they move past immediate aid and progress into developing and rebuilding the community. Almost a year has passed since the cyclone, and the initial disaster response has finished but there is still a long way to go in the recovery process.
