Typhoon Sendong Relief

Passing out more care packages
Philippines, 2012

MINDANAO, PHILIPPINES- HISG is supporting volunteers from Philippines, Indonesia and Brazil who are responding to the damage caused by Typhoon Sendong. The volunteers have formed response teams that are reaching communities in the Cagayan Del Oro area on the northern portion of the island of Mindanao.

The response teams are made up of people who were trained in HISG's International Disaster Response model. When the typhoon destroyed houses, roads, and bridges, and caused flooding that forced families from their homes, the teams were ready to respond and knew what they could do to help their neighbors. They are responding with food, water, hygiene kits, medical care, trauma counseling, and shelter for families affected by the typhoon.

HISG also helped teams from Indonesia and Brazil who were ready to travel to the disaster zone but needed a local connection in Mindanao. These international teams have added to the response capabilities and impacted hundreds of lives.

HISG has invested several years and countless resources into building local volunteers into the International Disaster Response Network (IDRN), because whenever these disasters hit, it is always the poor communities that suffer the most. The teams in Cagayan Del Oro were trained and prepared so that when the disaster hit, they were able to save lives when their neighbors were in need.
