Like many of the nations where HISG is involved, the health care system in Yemen is sadly under equipped and understaffed. In some areas, staff at the local health centers cannot even read the labels or dosage instructions on prescription drugs, and cannot do the arithmetic required to accurately fill a prescription. The meager resources are stretched even further by the arrival of thousands of Ethiopian and Somali refugees each month.
HISG is working with partners to improve these conditions by outfitting a hospital with intensive care unit equipment. As well as training doctors and nurses in the fundamentals of nursing, critical care nursing and contemporary surgery techniques. These services are not only designed to build the capacity of health care workers in Yemen, but they are also changing perceptions in communities that are unaccustomed to receiving aid with "no strings attached."
