Ethiopia Girls Home

Girls at the women's shelter
Ethiopia, 2009

HISG is helping rescue young women from miserable situations in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  They come to the shelter from the streets, drug houses, and brothels. Some are bought and sold in a cruel human trafficking trade. All are bright young girls who found themselves trapped by poverty and outcast by society, and view prostitution as the only way to earn money. They live lives of subjection, humiliation and misery. They are re-sold and moved from town to town, slaves to the whims of men who care nothing for them.

HISG is providing a shelter so that these women can escape to a refuge where they can live without having to worry about where the next meals are coming from. It is a place where they are safe and cared for. The women are then set on a restoration process that helps them reclaim their dignity and destiny.

The welcoming atmosphere at the shelter is a big part of the recovery process, since many of the women have been shunned by their family. The women are required to undergo a thorough interview process and live according to the house code of conduct. The purpose is to build trust among the women and between the staff and the women, who have been taken advantage of for so long that they often have very little understanding of what a healthy relationship looks like.

Once the girls are accustomed to stable life at the home, they can begin classes in hairdressing, sewing, or screen printing as a means of earning a living. This doorway to a better future comes as such a relief to them, that they are eager to learn the skills and apply themselves to what they are learning.

HISG and our partners are changing the lives of these vulnerable young women. If you would like to be a part of helping these women escape from the degrading human trafficking trade, please contact us or consider making a donation to HISG.
