It is difficult to put into words how completely the AIDS virus is destroying the core of Africa's culture. First, the raw data that shows every 14 seconds a child in Sub-Saharan Africa is orphaned because of the AIDS virus. Second, is the tragic fact that many of these orphans are already infected with AIDS and third, the cultural disposition forces children with AIDS to grow up as outcasts. Sometimes, even in families where the father and mother already have AIDS, children who test positive for the virus are abandoned. When all of these factors are combined, the result is a staggering number of children in Africa with no one to look after them.
HISG is reaching out to these children by working with a home for AIDS orphans in Nairobi. In Kenya, there are around 1.6 million orphans, and it is estimated that 150,000 of those children are infected with HIV. The home provides a family setting for children to feel safe and secure. HISG has also helped them build a primary school that was finished just in time for the school to accept 91 more children into the program. Besides adding room for more children, the new building has enough space for the classes to be split up into smaller sizes. This helps the teachers give more attention to each student, and gives the students a fuller and more personal education.
This school and home for children is a prime example of how HISG projects are impacting orphans and other vulnerable members of society. Many of these children are rescued from garbage dumbs or crowded slums, and given a home environment.
