The International Disaster Response Network (IDRN) and a coalition of partners are now responding to the destruction in Japan caused by the March 11 earthquake and the subsequent tsunamis. This is the IDRN’s first involvement in Japan after responding to disasters in Indonesia, Haiti, the Philippines, and Pakistan.
The response is being directed to six different parts of the country: North Sendai, South Sendai, Fukushimi, Minami Sanrikucho, Morioka, and Hachinohe. Local organizations from across these regions are involved with the effort. This relationship between the international responders and the local teams is what makes the IDRN unique in its ability to connect directly to the communities with the greatest needs.
The first assessment crews arrived at the devastated areas on March 14. These volunteers are braving frequent power outages, frigid temperatures and an unstable environment to lay the foundation for other relief projects. Once the assessments are completed, the IDRN will begin sending medical teams, food and water shipments, supplies such as sleeping bags, blankets, and tents, and reconstruction teams into the disaster zone.
