NIGER- A prolonged drought has caused widespread food shortages in Niger, and HISG has responded by purchasing and delivering food to thousands of people. The drought has killed livestock and ruined crops in the rural villages, where families live from harvest to harvest. The United Nations is reporting that about 19,000 children have dropped out of school either to help their parents search for food or to migrate with them to other countries. In the midst of this crisis, HISG's team in Niger has traveled to remote villages delivering food to families on the brink of starvation. One village elder said that the delivery was the most urgent relief his people had received in the last 30 years. But HISG is not just handing out food, we are working with the villages to initiate agriculture, animal husbandry, and reforestation projects that will offer villages sustainable sources of food, so that they can withstand this kind of harsh weather. You can use the audio player below to listen to HISG's International Director for Africa talk about Niger and the impact of this project in particular.
