PAKISTAN- An HISG team was recently in one of Pakistan's largest cities to visit a medical clinic in the poorest section of the city. The people here live in abject poverty. They sleep in tents, or in corners of the alley, or on the street. They are ignored by the rest of the city. An HISG team member met a man who was forced to move to the slum after the factory where he worked was shut down. He and his family were living in a crudely constructed tent. One night, while he was trying to light a candle, a terrible storm blew over the tent and the candle ignited a canister of fuel. The whole tent and all their belongings were burned, and the man's hands were burned so badly that he can no longer use them. The HISG clinic is the only place that would treat him, and is treating this man and hundreds of other poor families completely free of charge.
In addition to injuries, the doctors are treating a wide range of terrible diseases like hepatitis, asthma, and kidney failure. They are also helping parents recognize symptoms, so that when their children get sick they can get proper medical care while the illness is still in its early stages. This has made a huge impact in this community where, in the past, many children have died from treatable diseases. The clinic has transformed living conditions, life expectancy, and the entire attitude of the community.
This project would benefit greatly from additional medical staff that would be willing to spend a few weeks at a time working in the health center. There are so many patients in need, that there are simply not enough doctors to see them all. If you have any interest in medical service to a poor community in Pakistan, please contact HISG.
