HISG worked with Boeing Airlines and Kids Against Hunger to deliver 10,000 meals to Manila, Philippines to be distributed among victims of the typhoon flooding. The meals are simple to prepare, which makes them ideal for disaster situations in which appliance stoves and cooking utensils are not readily available. They are also made with ingredients that are acceptable to every culture, and are specifically chosen by nutritionists to sustain undernourished children.
The meals were shipped as part of a delivery of new aircraft from Boeing to the Philippines. HISG was allowed to use a portion of the cargo space to ship the meal packages, an example of how HISG leverages different networks to connect resources to needs.
HISG worked with a network of volunteers to deliver the food to children throughout Manila, and the families that received the meals were very grateful. An additional outcome of this project is that members of the community have stepped forward to become leaders in disaster response, and reach out to their neighbors.
Typhoon Ondoy damaged 100,000 homes in Manila and interrupted nearly every aspect of life. This project is a testament to the power of partnerships in getting urgent relief supplies into a disaster zone.
