HISG's Global Operations Center Monitors H1N1 Flu Outbreaks

Apr 30, 2009

On April 2nd, 2009, the first case of a new and previously unknown flu strain was reported in Mexico near the village of La Gloria in the state of Veracruz. Since that time the disease has spread to Mexico City, with verified cases throughout the world. HISG's Global Operations Center (GOC) is monitoring the spread of the disease using a number of different sources. Until now, limited personnel have been focused on the current H1N1 flu event. As the situation continues to escalate it is prudent and reasonable to increase staffing in preparation for a potential Global Pandemic.

On April 29, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced escalation from Level 4 to Level 5. Level 5 is a request from WHO to all countries to begin preparation for Level 6, which is when a Global Pandemic is declared. It is unknown when the WHO will declare Level 6 but it is reasonable to expect it will happen within the next two weeks.

All IDRN members and private sector organizations with capabilities to support the humanitarian effort for H1N1 should contact the Global Operations Center (GOC). Please begin reporting H1N1 related information for your region of the world. You can click here to contact us through the website, or call the GOC at +1-303-222-1942.

The Global Operations Center will publish Spot Reports periodically as new information warrants. To download the first spot report in PDF format, click here.
