MINDANAO, PHILIPPINES - In August of 2008, terrorists attacked the town of Kolambugan, indiscriminately killing men, women, and children, and burning down homes. Shortly after the attack, HISG and our partner began helping families recover from the deadly raid and rebuild their city. The holistic relief and development programs are helping local people to overcome the negative impact of the attacks and have even brought the different factions in the community together, rather than driving them apart. MOROCCO - HISG is supporting an education program in rural villages among farmers who have virtually no access to formal education. When the courses began, most of the students could not read the label on medicine, so they did not know which disease it treated, nor in what amount it should be used. The education program is having a profound affect in the villages, so much so, that one young lady, Alissa, walks for an hour from her outlying village to be a part of the class. She has energized the rest of her village, and now they all want to be a part of the classes. You can read the rest of Alissa's story, and hear how her motivation is changing her community online at www.HISG.org.
HISG has always emphasized the importance of working together for disaster response, and one of the most common requests is for more formal training. To meet this need, HISG's Director for Disaster Response is building a database of hundreds of individuals and organizations that have either participated in an HISG training event or have expressed interest further training in large-scale disaster response. A number of these organizations also participated in our first worldwide disaster response exercise in April. If your organization would like to be a part of this international network of people trained and prepared to work together to help others during disasters, please contact us for more information.
For several years, HISG has been working closely with the Malakote tribe in Kenya to help them build a clinic. A few months ago, the Malakote chief broke his leg in a terrible car accident that killed four other men. When complications in the healing of his leg required a transfer to a larger hospital near Nairobi, HISG was able to arrange the chief's trip and see that he received the necessary care. Thanks to the treatments at the larger hospital, the chief is once again able to walk. The crucial support from the Kenya office during this crisis, and the recovery of the chief, have strengthened an already positive relationship with the Malakote tribe.
