NIGER- HISG is backing a project in Niger that will plant orange, mango, and moringa trees and provide automatic irrigation to help the trees survive the harsh West African climate. This is HISG's first project growing the moringa tree, which has been called a "miracle tree" and "mother's best friend." This plant is very resistant to drought, and offers enormous health benefits to both people and livestock. The leaves of the tree contain seven times the amount of Vitamin C in oranges, and four times the amount of calcium in milk, and the seeds can be used to purify water. The moringa is native to India, but is slowly spreading to Africa because of the potential that this tree holds for dry, undernourished communities. We are excited for the possibilities in this new orchard, and will keep you updated on how it improves living conditions in Niger.
THAILAND- An English teaching program is making a difference in communities all across this Asian nation by preparing students for higher education and helping artisans expand their trade operations. The workshops and curriculum are well known and well received in several cities, but the program has now expanded to reach more rural villages where children have fewer educational opportunities. One recent workshop had planned to accommodate 30 students, but when the classes began, 60 children showed up because the demand is so high and the program is so well respected. This initiative is helping young people earn places in university, and be better prepared as they pursue job opportunities in Thailand and abroad.
HISG will be participating in an exercise along with a number of other International Disaster Response Network members to prepare for a disaster. These exercises are a fundamental building block for the partnerships that make the IDRN so effective. If you would like to learn more about these exercises and how they benefit individual organizations, as well as the entire network, please contact us. You can also click here to listen to one of HISG's operations specialists talk about some of the objectives for the upcoming exercise.
