Soccer on the Small Stage

NORTH AFRICA- The dazzling display of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa has captured the attention of the world, but in another dusty corner of Africa, with no fanfare at all, another tiny soccer tournament has made a group of young boys feel like they are world champions. HISG worked with partners in North Africa to host a tournament for some of the vulnerable children in their city. The boys participating are victims of human traffickers, and have been brought to this urban center miles away from their homes to beg for coins on street corners. HISG has been involved in reaching out to these boys for several years, securing places for them in local schools, and reassuring them that their lives have value far beyond the small pile of coins they collect each day. The soccer tournament was another opportunity to show the children that even in their terrible circumstance, they are surrounded by friends who care about them. You can read more online about how HISG helped this tournament progress from an idea by two California businessmen into a lasting memory for these neglected children. .

Haiti Earthquake Partner Update

One of HISG's key partners in the response to the January earthquake in Haiti is an organization in Brazil that was one of the first groups to embrace HISG's International Disaster Response model. They sent teams of doctors that stayed for three weeks and treated hundreds of patients. They also contributed about 2,000 pounds of medicine, and worked with the Brazilian government to deliver 4,600 pounds of rice and 400 pounds of condensed milk. These efforts have touched thousands of families in need in Haiti, and their efficient and effective response has earned them national recognition in Brazil. They have been a perfect example of how a group of volunteers can make a difference in their own community and abroad by being ready to help when disasters strike.

HISG Operations

HISG is hosting another gathering for our key partners from around the world again this year. The 2010 Starfish Community Expo will be September 16-18 just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. We will be releasing the proposed agenda later this week, but the emphasis of the event will be on how we can all work together to make a difference for those in need. One of the greatest aspects of the 2009 Expo was the number of people working in HISG's priority countries who took the time to attend. This is fantastic opportunity to find out more about how HISG connects resources to needs, and how you fit in to what we are doing.

Department Update: Training Center

The HISG training center in New York (pictured) has a pressing need for a truck that can be used in the upkeep of the facility. This location is spread across 55 acres, and was built in the 1950s. A pickup truck will make it much easier to keep up with the day-to-day maintenance tasks and renovation projects on the property. Any vehicle donation is 100% tax deductible, and will be a valuable addition to the training center. Please contact us if you would like to help with this need; someone from the center will be able arrange to pick up the vehicle and deliver it to the building in New York.
