HISG is a part of the Starfish Community network, and is cooperating with other organizations to install several high capacity water purification systems in community and relief centers in the Port-Au-Prince area of Haiti. The first shipments of these water purification systems have arrived, and the first two systems are operational and providing safe water. Given the status of the city's ports and airport bottleneck, this is extraordinary progress. Each water purification system can treat over 10,000 gallons of water per day, so the arrival of this shipment will change the outlooks of entire communities.
In this interview , Brad Reed of Water Missions International, which engineered and provided the water purification systems, talks about the value of the Starfish Community working together during disasters. Even though HISG played a key role in launching the Community and enabling the interaction, HISG is just one piece of the larger network. Together, we are able to leverage the combined strengths of a number of different partners to touch thousands of lives in Haiti. Your partnership with HISG is already making a difference! If you would like to give through HISG to this project, please visit our donations page or contact us. Thank you for your continued support!
The response from the medical community wanting to help earthquake victims has been overwhelming. HISG is coordinating with International Medical Relief to provide short term teams that will rotate into the disaster zone continuously for at least three months! That means the people of Haiti will not only get the emergency care they need, but will have steady access to medical treatment for several more weeks. Your contribution to HISG's relief efforts are making this long-term approach possible. Thank you to all of you who are supporting us! If you have not already, please consider a donation that will transform lives broken by this earthquake.
As the world focuses its attention on Haiti, HISG continues our mission to transform communities worldwide through sustainable development and disaster response. An HISG team is currently in Southeast Asia preparing teams for disaster response, so that when the next major event happens, their community is ready. With that in mind, here is a brief look at the road ahead for Asia in 2010. We have seen partnerships and collaboration taking place in a wonderful way. The past year witnessed multiple disasters in Southeast Asia, many of them just days apart. We saw that the network that is being established enabled the private sector to respond to all of these disasters on multiple levels. The collaboration and teamwork between various organizations created a significantly greater impact than could have been accomplished with each organization going individually. The impact of these different organizations in local communities has opened the doors in people's hearts and encouraged them to look for ways to rebuild their communities in new, self-sustaining ways. Also, because our models in community development have been successful, local and regional governments have opened the door for increased collaboration with the private sector. One mayor even gave us a key to his city. We are excited to build on these solid foundations in the coming year.
